Sydney - it’s the one shown all across the world when talking about Australia. Although my home town keeps getting voted the world’s most liveable city (Melbourne is pretty amazing I’ve got to say), Sydney definitely should be on everyone’s bucket list. Here are three big reasons why Sydney is up there in my favourite Aussie places.
1. It's got the good weather to compliment everything
If you like beaches, good food, general culture, sport, shopping AND whatever else you do, you'll be able to do it all in Sydney. There's beaches everywhere that you can easily reach and swim in, great restaurants and festivals with food all around, art museums and they have two dominant sporting codes.
As much as I love Melbourne with its laneways and more in-depth cafe culture... It is a bit hard to enjoy walking along St Kilda beach in Melbourne when it's pouring with rain in winter... Which is very common throughout the state. Although, I may have just been lucky with Sydney granting me lovely weather every time I go!
Sydney on average does have 240 sunny days a year. Checking the statistics, Melbourne's sitting on around half the year in sunshine with 185 days a year... So if you're looking for a place that's more likely to have great weather, Sydney's got that one ticked.
2. The city centre makes no logical sense and has a Quay to top it off
My city centre is very logical. It looks like this.
Sydney's on the other hand, looks like this.
The Royal Botanic Gardens are easily accessible to the right of the city in Sydney and no matter which way you look out onto the harbour, it seems pretty spectacular. With the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia at The Rocks, a decent market and just general welcoming energy around the whole Quay... There's a great atmosphere. Melbourne's Yarra just hasn't got that charm during the day and its got nothing against Circular Quay at night.
3. Sydney and Melbourne's rivalry just keeps getting better
An Australian battle of whether Melbourne is better than Sydney and vice versa has gone on for as long as I can remember. But the two State Government leaders have had a few cheeky spats on Twitter about why their state is better than others.
Although Andrews' (Victoria) point was good that Melbourne keeps winning as the World's Most Liveable City, Baird (New South Wales) pointing out that Victoria excludes harbour and sunshine is true and quite funny. A little bit of friendly interstate competition never hurt anyone.
P.S. Another great thing about Sydney? It's just over an hour flight from Melbourne and one of the most frequent air routes in the world! So it's easy to hop between the two and see what both have to offer.
